This year, the Jazz Foundation of America’s annual fundraising Gala, will feature a Max Roach Centennial tribute by Charles Tolliver, Dee Dee Dee Bridgewater, George Cables, Billy Harper, and Rufus Reid. As well as music by The Titans of Jazz Drums: Al Forster, Billy Hart and Louis Hayes.

The Pan-African Film Festival presents the story of musician Max Roach, whose far-reaching ambitions were inspired and challenged by the inequities of the society around him. Commentary by Max Roach, Quincy Jones, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, Sonny Rollins.

In celebration of Black History Month and in collaboration with Hamptons Doc Fest, the Parrish presents a screening of Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes – delving into the life and music of the legendary drummer, composer, bandleader, and social activist through a remarkable series of creative peaks, struggles, and personal reinventions—from the Jim Crow era to the Civil Rights years, surveying the heady days of post-war modern jazz to hip hop and beyond. The film screening will be followed by a live Zoom Q&A session with Co-Director Ben Shapiro, led by Jacqui Lofaro, Executive Director of Hamptons Doc Fest.

Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra pay tribute to one of the greats when they celebrate the centennial of drummer Max Roach. Roach, a pioneering legend and innovative master musician and bandleader, spanned a diverse range of styles and influenced generations to follow with his artistry and his commitment to activism.

Revered as one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time, Max Roach was among the first to use music to address racial, political, and social issues of his time. With legendary musican and bandleader Wynton Marsalis at the helm, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra performs Max Roach Centennial, a celebration of this pioneering master musician whose music spanned a diverse range of styles and influenced generations to follow.

Musical director Nasheet Waits (of Max’s percussion ensemble M’Boom) is joined by vocalist Cassandra Wilson, poets Sonia Sanchez and Saul Williams, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, pianist Nduduzo Makhathini and bassist Eric Revis. The Honorable Mayor Ras Baraka will help open the program, with a special appearance by The Last Poets. Experience the modern evolution of the Freedom Now Suite, a piece that continues to live, expand and inspire across generations.
